Soul as Living Presence:
Introduction to Hunting the Predator: Disengaging from the Critic
The Soul, like the moon is new and always new again.
And I have seen the ocean continuously creating.
Since I scoured my mind and my body, I too, Lalla,
am new, each moment new.
My teacher told one thing, Live in the soul.
When that was so, I began to go naked, and dance.
- Lalla, Naked Song
The living presence of our soul is what is transformed and matured in the course of our spiritual development. It is our living consciousness which when free to unfold, manifests its inherent dynamism, aliveness, and potentiality. The flow of
our soul, if unimpeded, takes us deeper and deeper into our Essential Nature and in turn pours out of us in the unique expression of that True Nature in our individual lives. For most of us, however, our souls remain trapped in fixed conceptual
and behavioral patterns that dampen and mute the quality of our daily living and limit its possibilities. These rigidities block fundamental change in our consciousness, regardless of how many spiritual experiences we have had. For this reason,
understanding the nature of the soul and how the super-ego blocks its movement is essential for those who are serious about transformation.
This group will have four venues of inner work – meditation, sensing &inquiry, breath-work, and the book study of Soul without Shame by Byron Brown. We will use an open-ended inquiry with sensing and awareness to become more aware of this
structure. As these restrictions within the soul relax and unwind, the dynamic flow of the soul can unfold, revealing more and more of its full potential, bringing us closer to Home.
In the last four years of teaching this work, I’ve come to understand the importance of the year long process is due to the insidious merging quality of the critic. It takes tremendous patience, perseverance, practice, and support to disengage
from this structure.
